Hailing from North Carolina, Shelly B has been influential in making their place on the map known in the world of hip hop. There’s many “firsts” she has accomplished including being the first independent artist from North Carolina to be featured in The Sources’s Unsigned Hype, being the first female artist to make it to allhiphop.com’s breeding ground, and the first female to be crowned champion of Radio One’s K97.5 Freestyle Friday Battle Contest winning seven weeks in a row against male artists. But if you met Shelly B as an adolescent you wouldn’t have thought her future would be so bright. Shelly B took to the streets at a young age getting in and out of trouble looking to find her way. A local rap celebrity wrote a song about her that negatively reflected the life of a young black girl lost. The song flooded the street corners of Raleigh, North Carolina nd while in a detention center for the last time Shelly B decided to use that time in her cell to write a response to that song. That rhyme was embraced by those who heard it. It was also the turning point in her life. And from there she made music, marketed herself and her music, performed around her area and became the female emcee and entrepreneur we see today.
She has opened for DIVAS Trina and Remy Ma and toured with Rah Digga. Hip hop made a difference in her life and she used it to make a difference in other lives by forming Shelly B Promotions, a promotional company that would create events giving other native artists a platform to showcase their talents. Shelly B’s star has not reached its peak yet. She is shining brightly as she continues to rise. Right now she’s an Underground DIVA working MAJOR projects. The day is soon to come when she’ll be a MAJOR DIVA working extraordinary projects.
