What is a Hip Hop Diva?

I am sure you have your own opinion of what characterizes a Hip Hop Diva. Here is mine…

A Hip Hop Diva welcomes an artist’s ability to candidly express themselves.  She is not offended when derogatory language is used to describe certain females. Why?  Because she knows that description may apply to some females, but not her.

A Hip Hop Diva understands where hip hop came from but more importantly understands where it is going. She knows that hip hop is a legacy and contribution to African American culture, American culture, and world culture.  She never rests on the laurels of the past, but rather constantly raises the bar to move the culture forward.  A Hip Hop Diva is always innovating and creating new dimensions of hip hop culture.

Of course a Hip Hop Diva has her own style and swagger.  It does not have to fit within predefined boxes.  She rocks what she feels and inadvertently influences fashion and style trends.  A Hip Hop Diva realizes that hip hop and style go hand in hand.  She doesn’t set out to make anyone’s best or worst dressed list.  She steps out to make her own mark.  She can do it all when it comes to style –  ranging from low budget items to fashion’s most elite, simple and classic to trendy and sophisticated – there are no limitations on a Hip Hop Diva’s style.

A Hip Hop Diva is confident, intelligent, and savvy in her talents and contributions to hip hop culture.  Without this confidence, intelligence, and savvy she would not have anything substantial to contribute to hip hop.  We can all agree that Hip Hop Divas produce nothing but high quality goods and it definitely takes confidence, intelligence, and savvy to pull it off. These are important keys to her success, allowing her to develop a relatable art for other Hip Hop Divas and hip hop culture overall.

A Hip Hop Diva knows how to take care of business. We all know hip hop is a culture, but it is also a thriving business. Hip Hop Divas have passion and love for hip hop while simultaneously possessing a desire to succeed in the business.  A Hip Hop Diva is professional and knowledgeable of her business at all times.  Of course she has people to assist with running her business because remember Hip Hop Divas are intelligent; they know that they can’t do it alone.

A Hip Hop Diva is absolutely a role model.  Not a role model in the sense of being a “good girl” and never making any mistakes, or shall I say socially taboo mistakes.  She is a role model in that other Hip Hop Divas, young Hip Hop Divas and hip hop in general can learn something from the life she has lived.  That life lesson can be an example of what not to do just as well as an example of what to do.  Most importantly, a Hip Hop Diva learns from the life she has lived.

A Hip Hop Diva gives back to her community, whether it’s a charitable contribution or the dedication of her time, she finds the means to give back to those less fortunate.  Even though her art itself is a gift to the community but she goes above and beyond that.

A Hip Hop Diva knows that there is room for everyone to uniquely contribute to the culture.  She knows that her success is not only measured by albums sold, spins on the radio, awards won, and other means of recognition.  A Hip Hop Diva knows that as long as she stays true to what she has been called to do then she is successful.  If her art touches one person’s soul, inspires one person to strive for better, moves one person to dance, soothes one person in their time of hurt, makes one person feel love, helps one person express their feelings or simply makes one person feel good then she has achieved success.

A Hip Hop Diva is a female who feels hip hop way down in her soul.  There are many who think hip hop isn’t soulful.  Well, a Hip Hop Diva knows that hip hop is an artist’s true expression of what they have lived, seen, and heard or what they would like to live, see, or hear.  Life’s experiences affect everyone down to the very core of their souls which is why the lives we live take a role in shaping who we are.  So, if our experiences play a part in whom we are and we apply those experiences to music, art and fashion how could hip hop be soulless?  In its truest form, hip hop is an expression of what’s housed within our souls.  A hip Hop Diva grooves, parties, cries, laughs, relaxes, energizes, enjoys, makes love, breaks up, and most importantly relates to hip hop.  If that ain’t soulful, then I don’t know what is.

Here’s a piece of my mind.  Let me hear your two cents.

Bravo. Being an Entertainment Law student and an intern, I am around a lot of artist…mostly male. Being in the studio with them, I am just a fly on the wall, not to be seen or heard…just to observe. I see and hear a lot. I used to think hip-hop lyrics and attitudes directly influenced how some women in the industry portrayed themselves. However your take take on what a Hip Hop Diva Is is refreshing. I feel good about what I do to help developing artist in the legal arena. I know where hip-hop came from and for which it stands. Good luck to you.
