Dat Gurl Netta is releasing her mixtape, Sex, Lies, Secrets, Vol. 2, today. You can download it here.
Slow songs coupled with rapid fire delivery are Dat Gurl Netta’s style and she does it well. Sex, Lies, Secrets, Vol. 2 is the perfect background to a passion session with your lover with her selection of lovemaking tracks. The mixtape however, does not showcase the featured artist, Dat Gurl Netta. For this to be a Dat Gurl Netta mixtape we should hear her rap more, however, on most songs she only delivers a verse. On others she may deliver a little more, but she plays the original artist’s entire version of the song which leads to the listener forgetting that she was ever on the song. If the artist selected her to feature on the song she would be a good fit with subject matter that blends in seamlessly and a delivery method that works well on slow tracks. As a listener I found myself jamming to Trey Songz and Beyonce rather than Dat Gurl Netta and that’s no bueno. When I listen to a Dat Gurl Netta mixtape I want to jam to Dat Gurl Netta. There is a standout performance on “Whatcha Name Is” originally by Kirko Bangz and Big Sean on the remixed version. Dat Gurl Netta comes in after Big Sean and assumes the female role with ease.
Dat Gurl Netta – “Whatcha Name Is”
“Weekend Lover” stands out to me as well because she tells a story on this song rather than complimenting someone else’s story as she does on the other tracks.
Dat Gurl Netta – “Weekend Lover (Interlude)
The last song, “Heart of Me (Song 4 Mama)” seems to be out of place on a mixtape complete with sex and relationship talk even though her intentions with the song were good.
Quotables
“If you ever wanna do it in a Benz with a couple of my friends in the end I’m a still be the same.” – “Whatcha Name Is”
“You should have known from the way that I was tasting I don’t play when it comes to the sexing. That’s how I do and I’m from Houston don’t mess with Texas.” - “Whatcha Name Is”
